The Internet is a great source for information if used correctly. As teachers, we need to teach our students to use the Internet properly. Students will be able to search for information successfully and be safe in the process with the proper knowledge and constant supervision. The Internet has a lot of useful tools for teachers and students that could be brought into lessons. Teachers can access movies and students can search for questions that they may have.
A great way for teachers to use the Internet is by accessing pictures of the items that are being discussed during the lesson. Don't assume that all students know what the state flower looks like. By showing the students a picture, it will give the students a visual as well as the needed information on the topic.
The Internet is not a safe environment for students. There are a lot of horrible things that go on within the Internet. Don't allow your students to be victims of it. Give them the proper tools and be a "present" teacher while your students are working on the Internet. Students should not be left alone during research. Be available for questions and help.

Dixie, I completely agree with you on leaving students alone to research. The best of students will go to unknown sites. They are just not mature enough to make those kind of decisions. It is a great source of information with millions of ideas.
ReplyDeleteI hadn't thought of it before, but I agree that many students may not know what the state flower looks like. You can find a picture of almost anything on the internet. And sometimes a visual picture or video would help to explain a difficult or unknown concept to your students.
ReplyDeleteI agree about supervision, students should not be left alone with internet access. The internet is definitely a good resource for teaching the children in every subject. I especially like your example of the state flower. You are completely correct about students not knowing what certain things you are teaching them actually look like. Students from my children's school mostly come from low income families, there have been certain things that I took for granted they should know, but because of their lack of resources they had no idea what was being talked about. The internet can open up a whole new world for students, as long as they are properly supervised.
ReplyDeleteI must agree with you here Dixie, if ever there is a time for a "present" teacher it is while students are surfing the net. There so many things out there for them to find and we as teachers need to be ever aware of what is going on in our classroom, especially at this time. You are absolutely right.
